YOUTH QUOTA IN PARLIAMENT BILL

Youth Quota Advocacy

Youth Quota in Parliament

Youth Quota in Parliament is a policy change advocacy aimed to increase youth representation in Nigeria’s parliament by 30%, promote youth participation in decision making, and ensure inclusion of younger women, as well as people with disabilities in leadership.

Justification:

Nigeria youth account for over 60% of the population, yet they are underrepresented in decision-making. Only 8 youths (under 35) were MPs in the 10th Assembly as of Oct. 2023 (2.22%). No young women & special needs (0.0%). Out of 993 State Assembly seats, only 92 are occupied by under 35 MPs (9.2%), while 4 are young women. Special needs are not represented at both National and State Assemblies.

To this end, the advocacy aims to close the marginalization gap and achieve the global target of 35% under-40 representation in parliament by 2030, inclusive of all genders.

Milestone:

The advocacy began with stakeholder engagement and consultations, gaining momentum when the proposal was handed over to the Chairman, House Committee on Youth in Parliament, Hon. Olamijunwolo Alao-Akala, the sponsor of the bill currently awaiting 2nd reading at the 10th Assembly.
